Who am I and what I am doing here ?

My name is Samuel Provost, I am a professor in history of art and archaeology, in the university of Lorraine, in Nancy, France. You can find more about me and my academic research and activities here. My publications are referenced in orcid and you will find the free open access version of them in the hal-shs repository. You can also follow me on Twitter.

I have been writing about Émile Gallé and the Établissements Gallé since 2016, at the beginning as the byproduct of my research in the history of archaeology : the last manager of the Établissements Gallé, Paul Perdrizet, was Émile Gallé’s son-in-law and a well regarded archaeologist and art historian. I wanted to understand how he could have managed the two careers simultaneously.

In the process of researching Perdrizet’s biography, I was fortunate to get access to unpublished, and sometimes previously unknown, archives from Émile Gallé and his company. I have presented some in scholarly venues, published articles and I have been working on a book about the Établissements Gallé during the first world war. This newsletter is a way of serialising this research and to help me articulate some ideas about it.

Finally, I have discovered that the available resources in English about Gallé are quite scarce, although many prominent Art Nouveau dealers and collectors do not read French. The Art Nouveau historical research field has made quite some progress in the last decades, particularly for the Ecole de Nancy, and my goal is therefore to help to make this research better known.
